Outcome of EU budget negotiations has
been greeted with
deep concern by African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) sugar
supplying
states
The European Commission had proposed a special annual fund of
€190 million under the Financial Perspectives 2007-2013 for 18 ACP
countries severely hit by the recent EU sugar reform agreement.
Commissioner Fischer Boel highlighted this initiative as an example of
the EU’s commitment to developing
countries, but no reference to this fund is found in the text
agreed by
European Heads of State and Government on 16/17 December 2005.

BBC - Region warned of tough sugar
battle
Glenys Kinnock, member
of the European Parliament, has said the battle for adequate
compensation for Caribbean sugar farmers from the European Union is
going to be difficult. Touring the Caribbean with a delegation of
parliamentarians from the European Union and the African, Caribbean and
Pacific parliamentary assembly, Mrs. Kinnock said the proposed cuts are
way too steep and would cause social instability and has promised to
help the region get a better deal.

Sugar: "Promoting the Sustainable Development of the ACP Sugar Sector"
Ministers representing the ACP
States signatory to the EU-ACP
Sugar Protocol and the LDC sugar supplying states under the EBA
initiative met in Kisumu, Kenya, to discuss strategies for promoting
the sustainable development of their sugar industries, in particular in
the light of the European Commission's radical proposals to reform the
EU Sugar Regime.

Joint ACP and LDC Sugar Groups Platform
In a joint platform to be presented
to EU Agriculture Ministers
and the European Commission, the ACP and LDC groups will reiterate
their contention that the reform is too deep, too fast and too soon.
The platform will stress the need for less drastic price cuts spread
over a period of 8 years starting in 2008, as reflected in the recent
opinion of the European Parliament Development Committee.
