Some
interesting facts about sugar in the ACP:
- In some ACP
countries, sugar exports under the Protocol account for over one
quarter of GDP, and no less than 85% of total agricultural exports.
- Sugar is produced
in 110 countries in the world and consumed in all of them. Most sugar
is produced and consumed in the same country; only about 25% is traded
internationally, and much of that increasingly within regional trade
blocs.
- The top ten
exporters account for over 75% of world exports and the top four
exporters over 50%.
- In addition to
providing direct employment for over 300,000 people on estates and on
smallholdings, the sugar industry gives indirect employment to hundreds
of thousands of others and by extension supports the livelihoods of
millions of family dependents.
- In all ACP
supplying states sugar is one of the most significant contributors to
the national economy. For example, sugar generates over 17% of GDP in
Guyana and 24% in Swaziland, while in Fiji sugar production is
responsible for over 90% of agricultural output.
- Sugar accounts
for major percentage of overall agricultural output; in some countries
it accounts for highest percentage of agricultural output.
- Sugar is one of
highest contributors to GDP and one of the foreign exchange earners; in
some countries it is the highest contributor to GDP and largest foreign
exchange earner.
- In addition to
employment, the sugar industry in ACP countries provides health,
education/training, drainage and irrigation, social, community and
sport services in rural districts.
